That's usually what I do as well. Just be careful of the trailing escort that it sometimes there. You'll walk right into that trap if you're not ready. If there is a trailing escort (which for me is almost always the case) I'll go out one of the sides while moving with the convoy. The escorts will have difficulty finding you in the convoy and will concentrate their search where the convoy has been. This leaves you a clean exit right out the side.
