So what you do is, edit the Basic.cfg file to add the 100 you get for returning to base to the 200 you get for completing the 24 hours on station so that you always get the extra 100 if you complete your time on station. If for some reason you use ESC to return to base, waste 100 renown by dismissing a crewman and hiring a replacement. He won't have the experience of your dismissed crewman, which is enough of a penalty.
If you're running GWX, you'll have to edit the values back into the config file:
[RENOWN]
RenownReachGridObjCompleted=500
RenownPatrolGridObjCompleted=300 ; 200 + 100 for completed patrol
