Why would they into the bilges into the engine room?

I have walked aboard the USS REQUIN (SS-481) in Pittsburgh.

It was an experience of my life to see the inside of a sub.
I walked around in awe, with a dumb smile on my face that only the
wife knew why, from what she calls sub-bing in sh2, sh3 and sh4.

The German U-boots would top that I think.
