She was a stray who found my daughter. She's an outside only cat, too. I was totally prepared for her to simply disappear at some point, we have bobcats (neighbor saw one on my roof a couple weeks ago), coyotes, black bear, eagles, and owls (not to mention rattlesnakes).

I sort of forgot about the birds, frankly. If she got bit by a rattler, we'd either know it right away, or she'd die. If a bobcat or coyote got her, we'd never see her again. The birds... well, again, for the most part unless we saw it happen, and the bird dropped her, we'd never see her.

What I didn't expect was a mortally wounded cat. Presented with that, it was hard not to want to at least try. The surgeon is the nicest guy, actually, and she's become sort of a mascot over there, she's about as bad off an animal as they'd ever seen that's actually survived. Her left side... wow. She has a lac from her hip all the way down the leg, and it connects to where she was disemboweled. Numerous holes from talons. It's amazing she's alive.
