Turning off map updates makes SH3 a whole new game. Attacks become harder but much more satisfying when you have to do all the plotting yourself.
However, there is something
overly difficult about turning off map updates, since in the real world you would have a crew that could plot marks on your map. I'd suggest using Observer's Assisted Plotting mod. It allows you to select and view information on a single target at a time (emulating the information you crew would give you), without showing you ship icons on the map. Good luck!
