There should be a small white bar under the mission name that fills up as you complete the mission requirements. Once it's full one, or more, of the gray crosses will fill up in the top left.
Missions can be completed across many patrols, just as long as it's finished by the listed date. So don't feel you need to sink all of that in one go!
