Patching will be required eventually, so might as well do it now. All new mods coming out are going to be 1.2 only, and existing ones are all being upgraded as well. There are some vital fixes that managed to sneak through the patch as well.
Even after turning "off" synching, you still get the super annoying wait and click synch messages in game, they just don't do anything.
