It does have an effect on your speed and bearing. In a storm, steering into the wind will slow you down, and I think that if you're broadside to the wind your boat will lean more in the wind direction. Neat touches.

And of course the clouds move according to wind speed and direction. I'm not sure if waves do though - they seem to change shape and form semi-randomly?

In reality waves should travel in the wind direction except in extreme conditions.
