For some reason, ESM is basically the one station where you don't have an autocrew option (periscope too, but that one makes sense), so you have to mark all contacts yourself. If a signal is too weak you won't get a classification, though often if you leave the cursor on the same radar contact for a few sweeps, you'll get one. This can happen with strong signals as well if you only catch them with the cursor as they are fading, but all you have to do is wait for another sweep and you'll get the ID.

I don't actually think you get multiple options in ESM like you do in narrowband sonar. I'll have to check, but I'm pretty sure in ESM you either have an ID or not, there's no in between. This is, of course, another realism flaw in the game, but I'm not going to make an issue of it.
