As its been said, they are very dated. They are probably somewhere between SHII and SHIII.

2) How realistic is it? Is it an immersion simulator or more of an action game?
Its very realistic, its so realistic its based on a US military training tool. If you are in search of something more realistic this is about the only other choice in town.

3) Hows the learning curve, am I going to need to read the manual 5 time and then go and get the degree to play, or will I be able to gently ease into it?
There is a learning curve but the computer can do certain things for you which can help you learn.

4) I know its only cosmetic, but are there any interiors to the ships/subs that you play as?
no. Its all 2d pannels with some 3d views (Sail Bridge, FFG Bridge wings).

5) What are your general opinions of the game? marks out of 10?
9.5. There are some things SCS didn't add that annoy me but its the best sim of it's type around... its the only sim of its type around.
