What do others do if caught on the surface in the middle of a transfer?
Stay on the surface and fight it out?
Or dive, then later eject the torpedo, on the basis that you'd abandoned it during the panic?

Well, although I've never transferred except in calm weather and all stop, I
have dove on the rare occasion I've been spotted. But not after 2 weeks ago, when I'd done some reading and learned that it was impossible for a U-boat to dive once they'd started until they'd finished.
Once I'd read that and took a moment or two to consider things that made dreadfully obvious sense.

The only way to get the torpedo inside, after all, is to open up the forward (or aft) loading hatch to inside, and if the torpedo's half-in half-out, well . . . doesn't make for a very water-tight pressure hull.
So, since I'd read that, I've chosen to no longer dive, no matter what. Makes choosing when/where/how I transfer a lot more, hmmmm . . . tactical.

And also makes me highly desirous of having more flak guns and
very motivated flak gunners!
