In rela life he could certainly make very exact estimates at distances less than 3000 metres, and progressively worser the more distant the ship is. Then again he might have used a stereoscopic portable rangefinder, as were foudn many times in Uboats, and that would give him a reasonable accurancy up to 15 km or so, depending on object size, movement, etc.
I ask him for estimates when plotting a target on a surface run to overhaul, and pretend he has such a rangefinder, so it doesn't bother me. Otherwise, when it comes to setting up the firing solution, I do estimates myself, as I'm normally much closer.
