i wondered the same thing but alas no...only when you are in very close proximity with a solo ship does it seem to at least remain centred on the contact otherwise it just seems to be random...

probably to simulate the sonar guy as you say...(wether he's there or not)
it's awkward job in the fog especailly where i'm hopping from the hydrophone to the bridge and back constantly- trying to see the ships before they see me!!
must admit these days if it's foggy i don't chase the ships unless it's a convoy and there's some hope the fog will lift...(?)
