Is anybody working on ambient illumination during ships' fires ?

It's something i wonder about by some time, as to me illumination during convoy attacks. I mean a 7600 tons ship in flames should be a huge campfire to have some around her, right ?

I'd like to see the benefits of the fires on it as well as flares fired from nearby merchants... I don't remember if it was common or introduced in a precise year of the war, and in my campaign i'm just in 1940 so...dunno
