Well yes you can man it yourself, that is if ya dont mind taking a walk on the deck to get there. Then just click on it, then aim and fire.

As to having it manned and fired by the crew, heck you dont even have to have it manned first. Just get the enemy ship in sight in the binoculars, put that crosshair on the ship, it turns red and then hit the spacebar and they will man it and start firing, then sit back and watch the show.
Now I had reported elsewhere that to get them to stop firing, hit the spacebar again but I have since learned that this doesnt work as I thought. I dont know if it was a fluke when I got it to work before but I havent been able to get this to work as it did once. But in any case, you can unman the gun by ordering the boat to surface with "R". It's obviously not supposed to work that way, but for now it does.
