Sounds like you are missing a file... Do you get a small pop-up window when your game beeps and pauses?
If so, the pop-up window tells you what file(s) the game can not find. If you run in Windowed Mode, the pop-up can be be viewed by selecting the pop-up on your taskbar.

I have always had to use "Return to course" when reloading a American Carreer save game myself. So not really sure about that issue.
