If you like deep RTS style games - Supreme Commander is a game I can recommend heartily. The Fragile Alliance expansion also is very good - and adds a few things that SC was missing. HUGE maps, varied tactics, intelligent AI and the challenge of balancing expansion with building and attacking.
I have to agree with your friend - avoid SupCom2 unless you really just want to concentrate of blowing stuff up....
