In "Clear The Bridge", Richard O'Kane tells how he took the
USS Tang (Balao class) down to 612 feet on her shakedown cruise. He stated "
Tang had depth capabilities no American submarine had known before."
A little earlier when talking about the pressure hull, O'Kane said, "As I hoped, it could probably take twice the pressure of the stipulated 438 feet".
And this was December 1943.
