I think the night-time brightness is influenced by the position of the moon. When it's up, you have a very bright night. A little too bright perhaps (even on my old CRT monitor), but then again it helps when playing the game at times - all too often do I end up shutting the doors and curtains on a bright sunny day (in real life). My wife doesn't always approve!
It seems that the problem is with the moon phase. Even when it's just a small crescent, the brightness is significant. On moonless nights (well, when the moon is below the horizon, rather than a new moon), it's quite dark.
Then the bright UI is a pain, as the map, TAI, and recognition manual are dazzlingly bright when attacking.
