Being a bit of a freelancer myself, I find the missions keep a "historical" or perhaps more accurately in the mindset; "Realism" to the game. Going around at random sinking ships is fun for awhile, but when you get a mission it gives you an objective other than acting like a bloodthirsty pirate. The last photo recon mission was tough for me. "psychologically", I had to evade three large destroyers plus a gunship just to slip into port to take some photo's. I got greedy of course and tried to sink anything, but that proved deadly every time I reloaded.

But when I shrugged off the greed, and completed the mission, I found enough targets on my way back to more than make up for it!

In conclusion, I would say that missions give you a course when you are aimless.
