I've had this happen twice to me. First time he was stuck 7km away and the second time 9km away. Both times I handed it this way:
Run them aground! Find a jut of land like below and say in this case he's following you about 5km due south of you, you head to the far shore and he'll follow you precisely and smash into the near shore.
