Re 10 knots in a IIA - I only ever achieve that during a chase and never ever cruise at that speed. I am usually nursing my boat along at below standard because I know I must also get these guys home when the patrol is "over". I said earlier I often change realism settings but this mainly means regarding assistance in torpedo target/firing. Whatever realism I am using I always use realistic fuel, compressed air, repairs and the rest of it. I consider "cheating" on the torpedo firing is really me using my weapons bloke and the "available technology" to help me out, I think most Kaleuns did that though I could be well wrong.
But actually getting the boat out there, then vigorous attacking... attacking... attacking, like the handbook tells you, and then trying to safely get back home again is all down to me.
And it is very nice to open the schnapps in the nightclub when it is all over!

Nice to meet you Henry
Play it how you want mate,as long as you enjoy your experience, and there is nothing wrong with having assistance, real captains had officers to help them do their job, imagine a captain trying to run a boat on his own.
Personally,I have 92% realism, and most tweaks activated via commander except from the 'realistic career length',I like to get accustomed to my boat and men and dont fancy having to retire my career without my consent.
Experience also comes from how long you have played the game, for me since it came out in 2005 I think it was.You will get better slowly but surely

Schnapps, good beer, hearty food, sexy German women and plenty of rest,oh and a good shower! thats what i'm getting after my current patrol.
Paul.
