Maybe not a total loss. If there is a place that let people rent video's try to ask them to restore the dvd. They have a machine that can fill the cracks with some kind of stuff. They may charge you but then it may work. If so then make a backup copy of it for safety since the original is damaged.

I have a place near my residence that can restore damaged dvd. Not perfect but just enough to back it up.
