with every mission you get a sunken ship icon that says "patrol here"
i have found no explaination about this and have more or less ignored it.
the red arrow spanning the eastern coast line - any ship in the vicinity of that arrow will credit toward your mission objective.
in some missions down the line, you will get a grayed out circle. in that case any shipping sunk within the circle counts toward the gaol
