You will however at least in my install have to hit shift+z twice to hide it.
reason being is that just once hitting it returns the info system associated with the HUD back on.
This had me quite perplexed but finally figured what was going on this evening.
And if you turn off the HUD with shift+Z, and them pull up the map the HUD reappears, but the info system is still off and no waypoint or target info will display when you mouse over it. To get this info on you must hit shift+Z.
So anytime you turn off the HUD and any other action that causes it to reappear such as going to map with "M", or external view with "F2" it's info system will still be off until shift+Z is again used.
