So I should be able to abort the patrol once I am satisfied that all I can do has been done.

But if you abort your patrol just because you have no eels left it is not very realistic, is it? You are evading the dangerous journey home (especially if you are unarmed) and a lot of boats suffered on the homeward run. I often vary the in game realism depending on mood etc., but I never consider the patrol over until I have seen my boat safely back home. There is also the fuel angle to consider. Keeping an abort patrol option open means you can be casual with fuel use during the patrol. I've seen the odd patrols where I've done too many flank speed chases then the only way I could get home was to use slow on the surface then submerged as soon as batteries were charged even when out of range of Allied aircraft etc.
