I was about to post this solution as well, but see you already did. I think I mentioned it in the bugs & glitches thread the other day.

I think the CPU power involved in loading and initialising the game causes the Ubisoft launcher/monitor program to think your connection has dropped, when it's there all along. Same way that Windows often reports programs as "Not responding" just because they've hogged the CPU for several seconds.
Hitting 'Esc' clears the screen without triggering the "back to menu" function of the OK button. If your connection
had dropped, the screen would probably pop back right away, but since your connection is alive it carries on without complaint.
