No thats just an evil government coverup, they give out the spiel about long nights and good atmospheric conditions but the reality is that they placed this secret telescopes down on the south pole to keep it secret or the population of the planet will go mad with panic at the impending doom. and once the population starts panicing the politicians who set up the secret project will start worrying about their chances of re-election after the world ends.
