I was just doing the "Intercept The Convoy" mission. Due to bugs and save issues I reloaded and they were RIGHT NEXT to me! So I scooted out ahead and met them the next day.
It was beautiful, like... 15 unescorted ships! I actually hit 3 ships with my initial 4 fish volley. Not seeing any warships around (cept some odd destroyer that was way south of me circling... mhmm...) I surfaced and started taking them down with the gun.
Now... I had the 'no voices' bug, so I had NO IDEA what the state of my ship was, which is why i was startled when suddenly I stopped. Apparently one of the ships was armed, but since I had no feedback sounds I had no idea I was taking damage and no one was saying we were being attacked.
Somehow I'd lost BOTH diesel and elec engines, I was flooding horribly, everyone was injured so I couldn't START to repair since my chief was injured! (How do you heal? Kinda sucks that if one guy stubs his toe, your whole boat dies since no one will repair anything!)
But it was all good, I shot a torp at the armed ship, didn't hit it, but hit something else (yay target rich environment!) and finally downed it with the gun.
So now there's like one ship that won't sink, even though HALF of it's under water. And like 6 dead ships and my gun's still blazing. It's at this point where I see a splash next to my boat. That's odd, I think since we killed the armed merchant. Then I remember.... I turn to the stern of the boat and sure enough, it's that crazy circling destroyer bearing down right on us guns smoking!
I rush to the UZO, line up a throat shot and LOS!! Sadly I misses since I forgot to reset the depth and it goes under the destroyer. Closer... closer... clos-- FLAK GUNS!! I scramble to them and vainly start to plink at the every growing superstructure of the destroyer.
Alas, it was to no avail.... he rammed into me at full speed, pushing me below the waves in a ball of fire! I bobbed back up as it rocked back from the collision and for a moment I had hope... until the pressure hull opened like a split egg and down we went...
I'll be sure to let God know you said thanks for your convoy!
