The aforementioned method of classifiying as Surface works perfectly. However if you are within visual range the AI will reclassify it to sub no matter what, so you better stay outside visual (which btw. helps keeping you alive longer).
Take note that, due to some error in the way the Maverick is handled, the use of the Maverick in MP games especially NCHQ Stat matches is prohibited. If you want to know more read up on the forums or buzz over PM.
