Also keep in mind that up until this attack, the British were not aware that the Germans had developed electric torpedoes - this was the first attack of the war which used them.
That overconfidence may have been modeled into unit behavior at Scapa Flow for the early war period?
Although I'm also guessing that you weren't forced to make you way into the harbor by maneuvering around block ships in difficult tidal currents. 
Did the destroyers and torpedo nets at the main entrance take a holiday too? |
