1. not sure yet, I haven't even unlocked stage two of the campaign, but I've done maybe ten patrols, and you are indeed assigned patrol areas (or, like yesterday, missions like sneaking into Scapa Flow to look for unguarded targets of opportunity! That one was pretty exciting.), and over the course of various patrols build up to the campaign target which is displayed on the map (i.e. sink 50.000 tons off the british coast), I assume to advance to the next campaign step. But nothing is explained in the manual, so I really don't know.
You do find targets outside your patrol area. Indeed, I've been ordered to range out and find targets of opportunity, and I did! Hanging around ports pays off, if you can avoid the destroyer screens.
2. Don't know - hasn't happened to me yet! But I assume this is going to change, the AI seems pretty decent.
3. LIke I said in 2, it seems OK, does realistic-ish things when looking for me (as far as I can tell), tries to cut off likely escape routes etc. Really haven't been attacked enough to tell though. Oh, and spotter planes fly 90% at night, and rarely if ever spot you. I did have one call in a destroyer that actually got me, though, after ignoring it and hitting time accel one time too many!
4. Dunno. I've seen other friendly subs, and seen "ship sunk" icons on the map. Don't know if that's the result of cooperative efforts or not.
5. Very well. I snuck up on an unescorted convoy, and while staying out of their machine gun range popped a few with the 88 before they ran away. I'll tell ya, though, don't get too close! The brownshoes will hose you with AA machine guns and you'll sink (eventually)!
