When I make contact I travel to it with full speed on surface, than when I reach the approximately spotting position, then dive and listen. I follow contact until I make visual contact with target. Then I make all necessary preparations for attack.
This method I use, although I can't say that my procedure is correct. Maybe, someone more experienced can give you more info.
