Depends on the weather conditions. Naval gunnery is notoriously innacurate, especially at long distances. When USS
Iowa and
New Jersey tried to chase down the fleeing Japanese destroyer
Nowaki, they couldn't hit at the ranges involved (30,000+ yards).
Granted a battleship is a bigger target, but if spotting took place at that range the faster battlecruisers would have a very good chance of escaping.
