Unlikely your video as such, would cause the whole system to shut down, the first thing I would check, not being familiar with that card, is that the power connector to the card is properly inserted and what is more likely is that the card is seated in the slot properly. I would never buy a video card second hand in case the reason he got rid of it because it was causing problems, did you check that the card edge connector was clean as well as the slot before inserting? What brand is the PSU
