The Kriegsmarine also experimented with rockets, a brainchild of U-boat captain Fritz Steinhoff and his brother, who worked at the Peenemünde rocket facility. Steinhoff's U-551 was fitted with a Schweres Wurfgerät 41 launcher capable of firing six 300mm Wurfköper 42 Spreng rockets, even at periscope depth. Despite some success, the program was not deemed practical enough and was soon canceled. The concept of a ballistic missile submarine was revitalized in 1943 when Dönitz wanted to use them for launching V-2 rockets. While three launchers were ordered, none were finished.
