What's next? Easy. Pay to play. The idea of tying a singleplayer, offline game to some kind of online account is just the 1st step into this account becoming a "service" for which you have to pay, sooner or later. And of course you won't be able to sell your games anymore, either.
This is no surprise though, the big publishers have made statements in that direction for quite some time.
