I know it doesn't really help you guys who are having issues, but I'm not so sure that windows 7 is neccesarily the root of the problem. I'm running the game on both my desktop and a new laptop that I got three days ago. The only common denominator between the two systems is that they are both running on Windows 7 64, albeit different flavours. Everything else between the two setups differs.
Both have the same install procedure, which is as follows:
Install of Stock SH3 (then patched, if necessary) followed by GWX3 Gold and SH3Commander. Mods enabled in GWX are:
GWX 16km mod
GWX integrated orders
GWX enhanced damage effects
GWX no medals on crew
GWX open hatch mod
Lifeboats&Debris_v4
Desktop specs:
Windows 7 Ultimate Edition, 64bit
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, (quad core, 2.4GHz)
4GB RAM
Geforce 8800 with v191.07 nvidia drivers
Steam install of game
Desktop resolution: 1280x1024
Laptop specs:
Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit (OEM)
AMD Turion II (dual core, 2.2GHz)
3GB RAM
ATi Mobility Radeon 4200HD with ATi Catalyst drivers v9.9
Version 1.0 EMEA retail DVD, manually patched to 1.4b following the approved method of bypassing starforce.
Desktop resolution: 1366x768
On the desktop (ultimate) I had to set SH3.exe to run in compatability mode for XPSP3 to allow it to play, whereas the laptop (home premium) fired the game up and ran first time with no problems whatsoever. I am playing the same career on both, just swapping the latest save files over to whichever system I'm playing on. The end result is that the game plays just fine on both systems, even though they are two very different systems. Both major graphics card and CPU makes are represented, both systems have different capabilities and different resources available.
Kaleun Cook: My current career began in 09/1939 and is now in 01/1940 and had no issues with the transition between years. Maybe this has to do with the date change happening while I was at sea rather than in the base?
Again, I appreciate that this enormous wall of text doesn't help you folks that can't get SH3 and GWX to run on your systems, but I just wanted to show that some of us can run SH3+GWX3.0 without any problems, even on differing system hardware. I suppose this could boil down to the 32bit version of windows 7, or maybe a certain set of circumstances and hardware configuration. I do find it odd that the ultimate version would require compatability mode where the home premium did not, but that could just be due to the steam DRM.
And in case anyone is wondering why I have two different versions of the game - for the longest time I'd mislaid my disc and relented when I saw SH3 on Steam for a daft price. Sure enough, my DVD turns up three weeks later when i'm going through my box of computer bits!
