Most strange, my first thought was power savings as Arclight suggested, I have power savings disabled in bios and windows yet I know my HDD goes to sleep without constant use, could be a faulty HDD!
What happens if you run a large screen saver? leave it run for hour or so and see if it freezes or if system reboots when moving the mouse.
