Armistead Excellent explanation for lifeguard. This question comes up often, I just bookmarked this thread.
Shio you will first get a recon. star. Go to it and patrol for 24 or so hours.
You will than get the lifeguard star and that is where you will find the down pilots. One tip try to stay south of the star and you just may find a very big IJN task force. 5 carriers.
