Ironically enough in its own right (in the sense of it being incorporated into what is generally considered by people to be a "Christian" holiday), "Yule" refers to the Scandinavian Pagan ritual of hosting a winter festival and feast every year immediately after the solstice took place, ending a short time after January began. For that matter, December 25th has long been held as a time for worshiping sun gods throughout various religions, including Sol, Elah-Gabal, and Mithra (who is essentially a parallel of Jesus deriving his roots in Persia and the Roman Empire 600 years before the time of Jesus and the apostles).
