The first combat patrol by a VIIC/41 took place in spring of 1944. I think stock may give it to you several months earlier.

In SH3 Commander, click the SH3 Options button, and in the list of option types select Time Compression. Then set each of "When enemy planes detected", "When enemy ships detected", and "When receive radio report" to 0 in the Max. TC column.

That is not too unusual. I have had several patrols wthout ever seeing a convoy.
