I agree 100% on the advantages of building yoru own rig

and would like to have a suggestion regarding which components are the best buy for the money:
Tom's hardware has a section for the best PC of the trimester, in three levels, cheap, medium, expensive. I picked their recommendated medium set up nearly two years ago, and it still is able to cope with all new games since then
