Odd. I just started playing SH3 with the GWX Gold mod a few weeks ago. Twice, I've been slow on the "ID 90" method of attack and hit the merchant in the stern ... with one or two torpedoes. In both cases, I've had to do exactly what's quoted above. In neither situation did the ship either stop or sink immediately.
