The problem with 3d glasses is that they're trying to achieve the 3d effect by superimposing 2 different images. That means 2 times more graphics to calculate for the pc, and also 2 times less fps. YOur friend might've been playing on a 60hz LCD. Not a good idea

. To get a good 3d effect you need to separate those images a LOT. That can twist your brain so much that you get headaches. The other problem is that your head has to be perfectly aligned with the monitor. Ever tried twisting your head while wearing the glasses

? HMD's give you 1 display for each eye. The technique is very different. The 3d effect is done completely by your brain so... no headaches.
