Kloef, I can assure you a GTX295 sucks quite a bit more power than that 5870. And the 5870, in every review I've seen, handles the heat just fine. A big jump doesn't matter, it's about peak loads.
I'll be waiting for the Nvidia parts as well, but not because there's anything wrong with the 5000 series. Excellent cards, 5870 is the fastest single-gpu card around and DX11 to boot.
