He was too worried by the perspective of getting caught by the Allies, and being paraded on russian streets by his big "rival" and arch-enemy, Stalin.
He also knew he would be recognised where ever he turned to, and that he would need treatement for the physical weakness he already was suffering from - and this in a shattered country like Germany.
I am sure he made the active decision to not survive, and carried it out. Him having escaped the bunker I see as a prime example of conspiration theory.
