Yeah, you're right. They should be more worried about their cards having a meltdown than keeping it quiet.
It's just that the average consumer isn't that savvy; they'll never check the temps the thing is running at; all they notice is how much noise it makes. Guess ATI is playing into that, while Nvidia only cares about their performance lead.
