Reminds me of a guy who lived in the City of San Fernando in Southern CAl.
He had built a small shack on rail road property and the RR let him stay.
You would see him all over town picking up pop bottles, they were glass back then worth two cents each. He was very clean and polite for his situation, and never begged but people did give him money or in some cases pop bottles. In reality he was sort of the town mascot.
When he finely passed away the RR tore down his shack and found over
thirty thousand dollars in it. That is a lot of money for the late 1950's
Where he got that kind of money is a mystery.
