Variable start day with new careers would be good - SH3 always started new careers on the first of the month. Being able to start anytime during the month would offer more flexibility (ie sail mid-August 1939 as a few boats did).
Variable days in port based on the boat type, repairs required and year (a la SH3Cmdr) would also add value. I know Beery analysed actual war patrols and determined that as the war progressed, time in port increased (for obvious reasons). From potentially 5 or so days in 1939 for a Type II up to 65 days in 1945 for a Type IX. This variation is what SH3Cmdr models via the "Randomised days in port" option.
